How it works

Giving a gift of real estate: How it works

Deciding what to do with your family home and personal belongings can be a difficult and emotional process. But a charitable gift of real estate can become a powerful tool to help you achieve your desires for the future.

  1. Consider what matters most in your plans for the future. Is it your time? Your finances? Your IU legacy?
  2. Work with an IU development officer and the Real Estate and Personal Property team to see if a gift of real estate can help you achieve those personal and philanthropic goals.
  3. Make a plan that includes a gift of property to IU—now or in the future.
  4. Choose how you want to make an impact, whether that’s scholarships, research, capital projects, or student programs.

Throughout the process, every aspect of the real estate giving process will be carefully and professionally stewarded by our Real Estate and Personal Property team. Meet Patrick and Ellen.

Jane used a bargain purchase of her family home to further her philanthropy across IU including a diversity, equity, and inclusion internship and study abroad scholarship.
