Outright Gift

Outright gift

A gift of real estate is a way to make an immediate, significant impact at IU.

How an outright gift can benefit you:

  • You can donate your home, commercial property, a vacation home, farmland, or other underutilized property.
  • You may be able to receive a federal income tax deduction that’s equal to the full fair market value of your property.
  • You potentially eliminate capital gains tax on your property’s appreciation.
  • You gain peace of mind by avoiding the inconvenience of property upkeep and selling the home yourself.

When I decided to sell some unused property, it occurred to me that rather than selling it, I could donate it to Indiana University. Deciding how to allocate the resulting funds took some thought, but I was able to split the proceeds four different ways. When all was said and done, I had an immense sense of joy and satisfaction knowing that my donation would survive in perpetuity at IUB and help students from many different backgrounds.
