Estate Gift Impact

The impact of gifts of real estate: Empowering a veteran and new father to pursue a career in accounting

A longtime supporter of IU Southeast committed a gift of real estate to endow the Monroe Shine Scholarship for decades. This scholarship supports undergraduate students majoring in accounting at IU Southeast with plans to work in local and regional public accounting firms.

I’m an Air Force veteran who served on active duty for more than six years. After my medical discharge, I worked as a disabled veterans outreach program specialist, helping veterans overcome barriers to finding sustainable employment. After a few years, I decided it was time to take my own advice and pursue a career in accounting at IU Southeast. I’m a new father, and it has been a challenge to juggle school and a newborn, particularly with my wife being the only one working in our household. The scholarships I’ve received have removed financial barriers and have allowed me to focus on my studies and my family. As someone who has come from humble beginnings, I have aspirations of providing a better life for my family. My biggest hope is that I teach my son to dream big, make goals, push himself, and know that once he sets his mind to something, he can do it.
